ROLE OVERVIEW

The Kitchen Hand supports the kitchen team in maintaining a clean, organised, and efficient working environment. This role is essential to daily operations, ensuring that chefs are supported and that hygiene and food safety standards are consistently upheld.

As part of Tomism, the Kitchen Hand contributes to the team through reliability, care, and attention to detail.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment using dishwasher and/or manual cleaning methods.
  • Maintain cleanliness of all kitchen areas, including benches, floors, sinks, storage areas, and equipment.
  • Assist with basic food preparation tasks as directed by chefs (e.g. washing, peeling, cutting ingredients).
  • Ensure all cleaning and sanitation practices meet food safety and hygiene standards.
  • Dispose of waste appropriately, including general waste, recycling, and food waste.
  • Assist with receiving and storing deliveries, including proper stock rotation (FIFO).
  • Restock kitchen supplies such as cleaning materials, containers, and basic ingredients as required.
  • Support chefs during service by maintaining cleanliness and organisation of work areas.
  • Assist with opening and closing duties, including deep cleaning tasks where required.
  • Use kitchen equipment safely and report any faults or hazards to supervisors.
  • Follow all workplace health and safety requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with kitchen and front-of-house teams to ensure smooth operations.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Previous kitchen or hospitality experience preferred but not essential.
  • Food safety knowledge or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Valid working rights in Australia.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
