Program Overview
The Level III Internship Program is a structured learning experience designed to support emerging practitioners interested in contemporary art spaces, exhibition-making, and event curation.
This program offers exposure to the operational, creative, and logistical aspects of running an immersive art space. Interns will engage in both event planning and gallery assistance, contributing to the delivery of exhibitions, public programs, and audience experiences.
As part of Tomism, the program is grounded in the belief that meaningful work emerges through connection — between people, ideas, and practices.

Program Structure and Compliance
This internship is designed as a vocational learning experience, not as a substitute for paid employment.
In line with guidance from the Fair Work Ombudsman:
- Internships are primarily educational and training-focused.
- Interns will work under close supervision and guidance.
- Tasks are structured to provide learning outcomes and skill development, rather than to fill operational staffing needs.
- Interns will not be relied upon to perform productive work that would otherwise be undertaken by a paid employee.
Paid vs Unpaid Placement
- The internship may be paid or unpaid, depending on:
- The nature of the role and responsibilities
- The experience level of the applicant
- Whether the placement forms part of a formal education or training requirement
- Where the internship is unpaid, it will:
- Be limited in scope to observational, learning, and assisted participation tasks
- Avoid assigning primary responsibility for operational duties
- Focus on mentoring, shadowing, and guided contribution
- Where the role involves regular productive work or operational responsibility, the position will be classified and compensated as a paid role in accordance with applicable workplace laws.
Role Focus Areas
1. Event Planning
- Assist in the coordination and delivery of exhibitions, openings, and public programs
- Support event preparation, including scheduling, logistics, and setup
- Observe and contribute to curatorial and spatial planning discussions
- Assist with guest coordination, RSVP tracking, and event flow
- Participate in post-event review and documentation
2. Gallery Assistant
- Support day-to-day gallery operations, including exhibition setup and maintenance
- Assist with artwork handling under supervision
- Engage with visitors, providing basic information about exhibitions and the space
- Observe and learn exhibition installation processes
- Assist with documentation, archiving, and general organisation
Learning Outcomes
Through the program, interns will gain:
- Understanding of exhibition development and spatial curation
- Exposure to event planning within an arts and cultural context
- Familiarity with gallery operations and audience engagement
- Insight into creative direction, concept development, and programming
- Experience working within a multidisciplinary creative environment
Eligibility and Requirements
- Students, recent graduates, or individuals seeking experience in the arts or events industry
- Valid working rights in Australia (if applicable)
- Availability for the duration of the 6-month program
- Availability aligned with exhibition and event schedules (including evenings where required)
